Imperial Club Spotlight Joseph Mendelow

Joseph Mendelow was born in Buffalo, New York in 1928. He attended elementary and high school in Buffalo and after graduating high school, Joseph enlisted in the United States Navy. He was ranked as a Pharmacist Mate, Hospital Corpsman and worked as a laboratory technician at St. Albans Naval Hospital, in Long Island, New York. Joseph earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the State University of New York in Buffalo and then enrolled in the University of Fribourg, Switzerland and completed undergraduate medical studies. Joseph then enrolled in the University of Basel, Switzerland School of Medicine, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine Degree. While a student in Basel, he was invited by a local physician to a holiday (Passover Seder) dinner at his home. It was there, Joseph met a charming Swiss miss, they dated, and became engaged and married while she was still a student in the School of Pharmacy, at the University of Basel, Switzerland. They returned to the United States, and settled in Buffalo, New York.
Here they were blessed with 4 children; 3 daughters and a son. As a family, they pursued skiing in the southern tier of Buffalo, which is infamous for lake effect snowfall, hell for driving, but ideal for skiing.
Joseph’s wife returned to school and earned her Master’s Degree in chemistry, CUM LAUDE, PHI BETA KAPA. She continued her interest in music, played the violin as well as working at the university and hospital, where she did research in the extracorporeal heart machine; and published papers. Joseph continued his residency in pediatrics, and became a Certified Pediatrician and went into private practice.
His hobbies are calligraphy and illumination of documents i.e. wedding contracts in Hebrew and Aramaic, prayers in Hebrew and English, decorative ceramic tile in Italian, English and Hebrew, etc.
Unfortunately, his loving wife passed away in 2013 after they retired to Boca Raton, where they lived for 13 years. They were together happily for 60 years. After his wife passing, Joseph came to live at Imperial Club. He presently has 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way.
