Resident Spotlight: Irwin & Ann Laufer

Irwin Laufer was born in Bronx, New York to Sadie and Alex Laufer, he is one of two children. Irwin attended elementary and high school in the Bronx and after graduation was drafted into the Army, in 1943. He is a veteran of WWII, and served in the South Pacific for 3 years. After returning from the service, Irwin became a CPA, certified in New York and Florida. He also was the treasurer of a coal mining company that owned mines in West Virginia, Virginia, and Kentucky. At this time it was one of the largest coal exporters in the country, selling steel making coal for Japanese and Italian companies.
He also was the Director of Finance for the Carvel Ice Cream Corporation. Ann Laufer was born in New York City to Jacob and Mildred Rein. She went to several schools in New York City but when she was attending Seward High School, her family moved to Miami Beach. Ann finished high school at Miami Beach Senior High School, and after graduation move briefly back to New York City and attended Queens College. She moved back to Miami, but continued with her courses at Queens College and received a Bachelor of Arts degree. She furthered her education at Florida International University, where she received her Master’s Degree and was an Associate Professor at Florida International University for 10 years. So how did Irwin and Ann meet? They met in Peekskill, New York where everyone went for summer vacation. Some of Irwin’s friends were in Ann’s group at the United Jewish Federation Club. At this time Israel was fighting to become a state and a home for Jewish people who were without a homeland. Ann was president of this club. So Irwin’s and Ann’s group got together and things progressed from that point on. Ann and Irwin were married, October 29, 1949 and have been married for 65 years. They have 3 children: daughter Jill, who is a Psychologist; son Alan Scott, who is a Lawyer and CPA; and a daughter, Karen Andrea, who is a Doctor. They have 7 grandchildren consisting of Triplets and Twins. Ann and Irwin moved to the Imperial Club to be around other people.
They say, ”it’s the best thing we ever did.” Welcome, Ann and Irwin!
